When Children Dance...

A dance can be a sacred ritual or a simple movement celebrating life’s pleasures. It’s also an illustration of how humans can become one with nature.

The 5th Asian and Oceanian Children’s International Folklore Festival 2008, which was held at venues around Jakarta from July 4-11, featured groups from Poland, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Serbia, Taiwan and Indonesia.

The participants performed distinctive dances unique to their home countries.

They performed commonplace children’s dances rather than ceremonial ones, using items found in nature, such as sticks, bamboo and flowers, to express themselves.

These children are spending their summer entertaining and educating people around the world with their dances, adding meaning to a time of the year that for most children means little more than idle fun.

Isolo, which literally means “dance on a boat”, was the central theme of this year’s Sentani Lake Festival. The event ran from June 19-21 in Sentani near Jayapura, the capital city of Papua province.

There are various kinds of isolo, like the isolo of escorting a daughter to marriage and even the isolo of carrying dumplings for working men. There are also isolo involving Ondofi, who the Sentani tribe believe is the highest of spirits. There is the isolo of carrying pigs for Ondofi and the isolo of carrying logs for building a house for Ondofi.

One of the Sentani tribe’s elders, John Wahei, says before the Sentani people came across religious missionaries, Ondofi was like their god.

It’s no wonder traditional ceremonies held by the Sentani people focus on Ondofi, the guardian of the Sentani people.

UrbanFest delights those at arm's length

People young and old are becoming acquainted with a range of urban-styled activities, including sports, music, dance and artwork, at the 2008 UrbanFest at Carnival Beach, Ancol Dreamland, in North Jakarta.

The festival, which runs until Sunday, features street dances, recycled art, murals, graffiti and painted sneakers exhibitions, a stomp percussion band, a lowrider bike competition, as well as rows of stalls selling urban-style knick knacks.

I forgot that yesterday (June 22) was the anniversary of Jakarta until I went to Ritz Carlton as the hotel was specially decorated to celebrate Jakarta's anniversary! Took these pictures while I was waiting for my friends at the hotel lobby.

Kama Sutra Relief in Borobudur

Borobudur is a ninth century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome is located at the center of the top platform, and is surrounded by seventy-two Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa.

It's historical, magical, mysterious and sexy - and it's in my country of Indonesia! :)

A Better Day...

My Friday will be over in 2 hours and it's slightly better than yesterday. The sadness is still felt here and there, but we (me, C'est Moi and Cupcake) are trying our best to stay happier. Cupcake still looked for the babies this morning. Unfortunately, she couldn't talk or she'd ask us where the babies are now. C'est Moi kept sniffing the door, the floor, looking for his babies. Not happy things to view, but well, as time goes by, we all try to accept the reality - they are gone.

Miskiyah's son-in-law is in Bogor, about an hour from Jakarta. He's going to be sent to ~~somewhere overseas (we don't know yet where)~~ Middle East in 4 days as a worker. Hope the procedure is legal. Miskiyah is going to visit him in the morning and will be back here in the afternoon.

She got these apples from his "ex-boyfriend" this morning. He's so sweet... But unfortunately, they taste bitter and sour and only look good in pictures :)

New fuel prices announced

Premium gasoline price is increased by one-third from Rp 4,500 (48 U.S. cents) to Rp 6,000 while diesel fuel is hiked from Rp 4,300 to Rp 5,500.

The price of kerosene, which is used by most poor families, is increasead 25 percent from Rp 2,000 to Rp 2,500.

The new prices will be effective on the stroke of midnight.

Purnomo was accompanied by host Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, Social Services Minister Bachtiar Chamsah, and Communications and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh.
