It looks like garbage, but it tastes really good! :D We have a lot of it, so it will also be my lunch tomorrow.
Show us your mother.
See how beautiful she was on her engagement and wedding day...
Took this picture on her 63rd birthday. The last birthday she had.
My heart still breaks every time I see this picture. I took this picture secretly with my camphone on Thursday - December 01, 2005. In about 15 hours after I took this picture, she passed away...
And this is the picture that's hanging on the wall of our living room. The same picture she had on her ID :)
This banner I dedicate for my Mother and Mother's Day. Will put it off tomorrow morning. These pictures were taken in a photo booth of Somerset MRT Station - Singapore, in 1994. She's not fat in this picture, but her face was swollen from the medicine she took. She'd had a fight against Lupus since 1990 and lost the battle in 2005. What a warrior queen, eh? :)
What's the best thing about your mom?
Words can't never describe how wonderful she was as a woman, a child of God, a daughter, a friend, a sister, a wife, and a mother. Selfishly, I'd say that I don't care if anyone think that their mother is the best, but none can ever beat my Mom :)
Anyway, I think the best thing about my Mom is that she's a woman of God who always prayed for her husband and daughter, day and night - until her last day on Earth.
I came across this entry and suddenly I felt the loss. Somewhat I am "happy" that Mother's Day isn't celebrated in Indonesia. Our "Mother's Day" is celebrated on December 20, and it's not really a Mother's Day, but Women's Day.
I have no child to give me a kiss this morning
I have no mother-in-law, no matter how annoying she could be, to give a hug today
But I am thankful that God gives me a chance to once felt how happy it was having a mother
And I am honored that God still gives me a chance to take care of my father
My little dogs, thank you for being my kids in our own weird ways
Thank You, Lord
for being my Father and my Mother
for loving me and taking care of me much better than any parents in the world can do
Happy Mother's Day, God
Anyway, this is the e-card I sent to all mothers I know. My friends and my aunts. Please consider this as the e-card I send you too :)
My parents and I were very frank to each other. It's a good thing, but sometimes being too honest is not really a good thing :D Even when Mom was still with us, Dad's been always said that he loved Mom more than he loved me, and he's seriously unhappy that Mom loved me more than she loved him. Hehe. She never asked him what to eat daily, but every time she went to a market, she always asked me what I'd have for lunch and dinner.
Just imagine how much I miss my mother now? :)
I've never told my parents, but honestly deep inside, I loved Mom more than I loved Dad. I loved them both, but I was closer to Mom. She's my best friend, but Dad, even though he's a great guy, he's never been our really close friend :D He lives in his own world, he doesn't like talk much to us. It's not a bad thing, but we're chatty and we like to go out. He never want to leave the house if it's not really important. We've never had such thing like family picnic, but it's fine because he's been a very faithful and honest husband to my Mom - and that's the best thing a father can do for his children.
So dear Mommy in Heaven,
Just to let you know that you're still my favorite - and this is my Mother's Day e-card for you :)

Love,
Connie

It's Saturday night, and I'm at home, having movies marathon. Both are Martin Scorsese's with Leonardo DiCaprio in it. Not bad, huh?
When you decide to be something, you can be it. That's what they don't tell you in the church. When I was your age they would say we can become cops, or criminals. Today, what I'm saying to you is this: when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?
- Frank Costello, "The Departed"
I think my period had been really missing me. I thought she'd come on Monday, but she came this evening. Two days earlier. I still feel my tummy's squeezed, though.
And she came while I was watching "The Departed" on TransTV. My vision got distracted tonight because Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon looked alike to me in this movie. Hmmm.
It's kinda a happy ending movie, because everyone finally got killed and died.
But I was wrong. Because few minutes later, DiCaprio woke up from his death in "Gangs of New York".
I was actually tired of watching these movies. They both are full of riots and blood. It reminds me of my current situation. My mind is in riot, and I'm having period. But I keep watching anyway because I got nothing else to do, and I might get some lessons of life from watching movies.
I learned that power isn't always everything. Powerful people have power to do everything and to have anything they want in life, but actually they are lonely people. It's hard to find one sincere soul to be your friend and your trustee when you're up there on the top.
When you kill a king, you don't stab him in the dark. You kill him where the entire court can watch him die.
- Amsterdam Vallon, "Gangs of New York"
Then I asked myself. I'm not powerful, but why then I share and feel the same loneliness Frank Costello and Bill Cutting had?
My father told me we were all born of blood and tribulation, and so then too was our great city. But for those of us what lived and died in the furious days, it was like everything we knew was mildly swept away.
- Amsterdam Vallon, "Gangs of New York"
That's very true. And if every baby knew this, nobody would ever want to be born...
It's a funny feeling being taken under the wing of a dragon. It's warmer than you'd think
- Amsterdam Vallon, "Gangs of New York"
Anyone wants to be my dragon?
Thanks for dating me this Saturday night, DiCaprio. Great movies, and I enjoyed them a lot.
This was one of my (late) mother's favorite Indonesian soup. It's called "Sayur Asem" (Sour/Tamarind Soup). We usually eat this with fried salted fishes, but if it's hard for you to get them, just skip the additional fun :)
Ingredients
- 400gr beef and bones
- 1/4 cup raw peanuts
- 3 corn on cob, cut into 4 each
- 2 chayote or zucchini, peel, wash, discard the seed, cut into small pieces
- 200 gr long beans, but this time I used string beans, wash and cut into 4cm in length
- chili paddy/bird's eye chili, as many as you like
- 5 cloves of garlic
- 5 cloves of small red onion
- 5 candle nuts
- 1 tsp shrimp paste
- 2 tsp tamarind paste
- 1/2 tomato
- salt
- sugar
- water
Method
In a pot boil the beef and bones in water until tender. While boiling the meat, prepare the spices. In a blender put garlic, onion, candle nuts, chili, shrimp paste and tomato, grind until smooth. Put it aside. When the meat is tender enough, take it out and cut into small pieces. Put it back. Add corn, continue to boil until cooked. Add the chayote and string beans, cook for 3minutes until they are cooked (not overcooked). Add the smooth spices. Add salt and sugar and adjust the taste.

And this was one of the reason why Mom loved Singapore and always missed going there all over the time. It's Hainanese Chicken Rice, but you can find it in the whole city/country of Singapore. She also only ordered this food when we dined out in any Singaporean restaurant here.
- 1 (2-pound) chicken
- 1 scallion, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 4 slices fresh, peeled ginger
- 6 tbsp vegetable oil or chicken oil rendered from chicken fat
- 6 to 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 4 cups long-grain uncooked rice, washed and drained
- 1 tsp fine salt
Mix together for Chili Sauce
2 to 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, 5 tbsp finely chopped fresh red chilies, 5 cloves garlic, chopped, 3 tbsp finely chopped ginger, 1 tsp fine salt, 1/2 cup boiling hot chicken soup
Method
Boil a large pot of water. Stuff the cavity of the chicken with scallion and ginger. Add chicken to boiling water, breast side-down. Lower the heat to a simmer just under boiling point and cook, covered until just cooked through, about 40 minutes. Bathe the chicken in an ice water bath till chicken is cold to create a tender, springy texture. Heat oil in a rice cooker, add garlic, stir fry till fragrant. Add uncooked rice, stir fry for two minutes, add salt and enough chicken soup to cover 1/2 inch above the top of the rice. Boil on high heat, lower heat when steam holes form, cover and steam for 30 minutes till rice is cooked. Chop chicken and serve with steaming hot rice and chili sauce. Dark soya sauce is the ideal accompaniment.

Besides yours, who do you think deserves "The Best Mother in the World" award?
Submitted by Connie.
The callings started when my parents left me for about a year to Hong Kong, and I was less than 2 year-old at that time. I was taken care by Mama and Papa, and their children aka my cousins. Their youngest child is 10 years older than me, so I was like their youngest sister :)
Not long my parents were back to Indonesia, we got bankrupt - but I never missed a birthday party of my own for years. Mama and Papa threw me the parties, bought the birthday dresses... Even until my parents and I moved to Jakarta when I was 9, they still sent me birthday gifts on my birthdays. They always treat me like their own daughter, and somehow we (my parents and I) owe our lives to them. They helped us a lot when we got financial difficulties.
Mama has been a mother to me and to Dad, even though we're only her niece and younger brother. The love she shares to us is motherly, and we thank her for that.
Anyway, I believe that every mother in the world is the best mother for their kids. And all mothers deserve to get crowned as "The Best Mother in the World" by their spouse and children...
